SC directs the implementation of a minimum 1/3rd reservation for women in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA)

Today (May 02, 2024), the Supreme Court (SC) of India directed the implementation of the minimum 1/3rd reservation for women in the posts of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), including the upcoming elections (2024-2025). The top court bench constituting Justice Surya Kant and Justice KV Viswanathan ordered, “In the ensuing elections for 2024-25, the post of the Treasurer of the Supreme Court Bar Association is reserved for women.” Along with this, the SC bench also directed that one post of the office bearers of the SCBA should be reserved for women candidates. Further, it stated that a minimum of 1/3rd of reservations in the junior and senior executive committee of the SCBA should be for women. The order reads, “We are however of the view that notwithstanding any resolution passed by the SCBA, some of the posts in the Executive Committee must be reserved for women members of the bar.” The elections will be held on May 16 and the declaration of results will be on May 18, 2024.
