Two families were murdered in Uttar Pradesh in 2001-2002. Despite investigations and trials, acquittals were handed down and many questions remained about investigative lapses. The petitioners sought the Supreme Court's intervention for a fair re-investigation. The Court held that while the 2002 murder case (FIR 228) could not be re-investigated as final appeals had been exhausted, the 2001 murder case (FIR 221) warranted re-investigation due to the trial court's explicit finding of improper investigation. A Special Investigating Team headed by a retired CBI officer was constituted to conduct a fair re-investigation within three months.
