In relation to the Bhema Koregaon case, today (September 16, 2025), the Supreme Court (SC) of India granted interim bail to Mahesh Raut for 6 weeks on medical grounds. He was arrested in June 2018, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, over alleged Maoist links, and has been in custody since then. Today, the two-judge bench of the SC, consisting of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, granted him bail after hearing Senior Advocate CU Singh. During the proceedings, he mentioned that Mahesh Raut suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis and needs urgent medical assistance. On the contrary, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju opposed the same, stating that the allegations against Mahesh Raut are serious. Further, Senior Advocate Singh (appeared for Mahesh Raut) said that the Bombay High Court has already granted him bail on merits on September 21, 2023, but the HC stayed the order for the NIA (National Investigation Authority) to file an appeal. He also added that the NIA has submitted an appeal before the SC bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Aniruddha Bose, which also extended the stay on bail ordered by the Bombay HC for 1 week, and since the stay has been extended time to time. After hearing the matter, Justice Sundresh ordered, “The applicant is seeking interim bail on medical grounds coupled with the fact that he was actually granted bail, we are inclined to grant medical bail for a period of 6 weeks.” The matter will be next heard in October 2025.
