The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI has approached the Supreme Court challenging the order granting bail to former Uttar Pradesh legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with a case arising out of the Unnao rape matter.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar is presently serving a life sentence after being convicted in the Unnao rape case. The bail in question was granted by the High Court in a separate but related criminal proceeding. Aggrieved by the said order, the CBI has moved the apex court seeking cancellation of bail.

In its plea, the CBI has contended that the High Court failed to properly appreciate the gravity of the offence and the overall background of the case. The agency has submitted that the offences involved had a far-reaching impact on society and shook the collective conscience of the nation.

The CBI has further argued that the accused has a history of influencing witnesses and misusing his political position. According to the agency, granting bail in such circumstances poses a serious risk to the fair administration of justice and undermines public confidence in the criminal justice system.

It has also been highlighted that Sengar stands convicted in connected matters and is currently undergoing imprisonment, which reflects adversely on his conduct and criminal antecedents. On these grounds, the CBI has urged the Supreme Court to set aside the impugned bail order.

The Supreme Court is expected to examine whether the High Court exercised its discretion judiciously while granting bail, keeping in view the seriousness of the allegations, the past conduct of the accused, and the potential impact on the ongoing proceedings.

The matter is likely to be listed for hearing in due course.
