Convicts in Bilkis Bano case move to the SC seeking an extension of time to surrender before the concerned jail authorities

In a recent judgment, Bilkis Yakub Rasool vs. Union of India & Others, delivered by the Supreme Court (SC) of India, remission of all the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case was set aside and directed to them to report to the concerned jail authorities within two weeks from January 08, 2024. In context with this order, three convicts have moved to the Supreme Court seeking an extension of time to surrender before the concerned jail authorities. One of the convicts, Govindbhai Nai, sought an extension of four weeks to surrender. The application filed by Govindbhai Nai submitted that he is looking after his 88-year-old father (who is bedridden and dependent on him) and 75-year-old mother being the only caretaker of his parents. He further claimed that he is a 55-year-old man who is suffering from Asthma and is in poor health.

Another convict, Ramesh Rupabhai Chandana, also moved the SC seeking an extension of time to surrender before the concerned jail authorities by another six weeks. He claimed that he has to get his son married and fulfill the responsibility as a father. Moreover, Convict Mitesh Chimanlal Bhat also moved the SC seeking an extension of time by another six weeks. He submitted that his winter produce is ready for harvest and would surrender after completing the process.
