HYDERABAD: In a major push toward reducing judicial backlog and ensuring swift dispute resolution, the Telangana State Legal Services Authority (TSLSA) successfully disposed of over 9.28 lakh cases during the second National Lok Adalat of the year. The massive single-day alternative dispute resolution (ADR) drive resulted in a total settlement amount of ₹422 crore awarded across various categories of litigation.

According to official data released by the legal services authority, a total of 9,28,322 cases were brought to finality. The disposal matrix indicates a balanced clearance of both existing litigation and nascent disputes, comprising 3,80,292 pre-litigation matters and 5,48,030 pending court cases.

State-wide Bench Strength and Institutional Push
To facilitate the massive volume of settlements, 353 Lok Adalat benches were constituted across the state. This included 349 benches established across various judicial districts, two dedicated benches within the Telangana High Court, and two specialized benches at the Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRT) in Hyderabad.

The record-breaking disposal rate was driven by strategic pre-arbitration planning under the guidance of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Patron-in-Chief of TSLSA, alongside Justice P. Sam Koshy, Executive Chairman of TSLSA, and Justice K. Lakshman, Chairman of the High Court Legal Services Committee (HCLSC).

To optimize settlement outcomes, the authority conducted extensive Pre-Lok Adalat sittings weeks in advance. The institutional machinery worked in coordination with key stakeholders, including the Director General of Police, the Director of Prosecution, banking institutions, and major insurance corporations, to identify matters ripe for compromise.

Key Highlights and High-Value Settlements
The Lok Adalat witnessed the resolution of several long-standing, high-stakes matters, highlighting the efficacy of the forum in handling complex litigations:

  • Resolution of a 16-Year-Old Dispute: A notable achievement included the settlement of a criminal dispute originating from the Habeeb Nagar Police Station in 2009. Through continuous judicial counselling, the parties arrived at a comprehensive compromise that effectively closed three interconnected legal proceedings.
  • Significant Motor Accident Claims: In Nizamabad district, a major motor accident claim was resolved for an amount of ₹1.10 crore, awarded to the dependents of a deceased victim, following voluntary settlement terms agreed upon by TATA AIG Insurance Company.
  • High Court Disposals: At the High Court level, two separate benches—presided over by Justice Renuka Yara and Justice Suddala Chalapathi Rao—successfully closed 176 pending cases, awarding a cumulative compensation of ₹8.96 crore in motor accident claim appeals.
  • Land Acquisition Executions: The drive also provided immense relief to landowners waiting for compensation payouts. Backed by a government deposit of ₹17.61 crore aimed at clearing land acquisition execution petitions, numerous long-standing claims were satisfied. This included the resolution of 18 separate execution petitions in Adilabad district alone following a specialized deposit of ₹65.33 lakh.

The Impact on Judicial Pendency
Legal experts and authority representatives highlighted that the massive disposal brings absolute finality to nearly a million disputes, as awards passed by a Lok Adalat carry the decree of a civil court and are non-appealable.

Ch. Panchakshari, Member Secretary of the TSLSA, observed that the high settlement rates not only offer immediate relief to litigants by avoiding prolonged litigation costs but also significantly unburden the regular trial courts, allowing them to dedicate resources to complex, non-compoundable matters.
