Supreme Court indicted the Tamil Nadu Government's remark on religious conversion issue as “political colour”

On Monday, the Supreme Court of India accused the Tamil Nadu Government of giving “political colour” to the religious conversion issue through deceit, force, and allurement. The two-judge bench of the Supreme Court including Justices CT Ravikumar and MR Shah sought assistance of R Venkataramani (Attorney general) for deciding a plea to take steps for controlling fraudulent religious conversions. The judges of the top court asked the Attorney Genral to appear in a plea as amicus curiae and assist the court in adjudication as well as suggest certain remedial measures which could be taken in this regard.
An advocate appearing for Tamil Nadu, Advocate P Wilson, tirade against the plea by Ashwini Upadhyay (petitioner’s advocate) as a politically motivated PIL. He further stated that “There is no conversion taking place in Tamil Nadu.” While hearing this case, the Supreme Court bench told Advocate P Wilson to not politicise the matter as it is a very serious issue. Also, the top Court renamed the cause title as “In Re: Issue of religious Conversion” because the lawyers objected to the petition filed by Upadhyay’s name and posted next hearing on February 7, 2023.
Along with this, the affidavit presented by the Union Government informed the Court that certain measures were already taken in context with menace of conversion via allurement, deception and force. The affidavit highlighted nine states, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Odisha, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, have enacted anti-conversion laws to restraint conversion through deception, allurement or force.
