Supreme Court to share case information to Advocates and Parties on WhatsApp, says “It will go a long way in saving paper and our planet Earth”

Today in the Supreme Court of India, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud announced a new initiative of integrating WhatsApp messaging services with its IT services. He said “In the 75th year of its existence, the Supreme Court of India launches a small initiative. It has the potential to have a big-bang impact. WhatsApp Messenger has been a ubiquitous service in our daily lives and has taken a role of a powerful communication tool. To strengthen the right to access to Justice and enhance transparency in the judicial system, the Supreme Court announces integration of WhatsApp messaging services with its IT services.” 

Further, the CJI remarked that through this initiative, the Advocates-on-Record (AoR) and Parties in person will receive WhatsApp automated messages, on the successful filing of the cases, regarding electronic filing, cause lists, orders, and judgments. He said, “advocates to receive automated messages about the filing of cases.. all members of the bar will get cause lists as and when published...the number transmits one-way communication.” The official WhatsApp number of the top Court is 8767687676. 

The CJI added, “This facility and service will bring in a significant change in our daily work habits. It will go a long way in saving paper and our planet Earth.” Moreover, the CJI observed that this initiative will help more lawyers to gain access to the top court and said “We are also migrating all our services into Meghraj cloud 2.0, which is the cloud infra created by National Informatics Centre (NIC) and we are moving Supreme Court and e-courts project as well. Now, all courts can go online as earlier there were only restrictions. The data is all preserved on servers in India.”
