On October 30, 2025 (Thursday), the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court (SC), Justice Surya Kant, was appointed as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) with effect from November 24, 2025, after the retirement of current CJI BR Gavai on 23rd November. The Union Government issued a notification yesterday, illustrating the same: “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025.” He will remain CJI for nearly 16 months as the 53rd CJI.

The information was further confirmed by Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of Law and Justice, as he posted on X (earlier known as twitter), “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025. I convey my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him.” Earlier this month, CJI Gavai suggested Justice Surya Kant’s name for appointment as Chief Justice of India.
