Today, the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court heard, for the ninth day, the arguments in the Same-sex Marriage Recognition case. The hearing will again resume tomorrow, May 11, 2023. The argument today was mainly on adoption rights. Moreover, during the proceedings, it was determined that various states of India are against the legalization of same-sex marriage including Rajasthan, Manipur, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh. The Court proceedings ended today after Senior Advocate Mukul Rastogi said “If you don’t agree to SMA, this court grants us a declaration that we have a right to marry…we need some document saying that we are married…I cannot take the judgment…we would be asked for proof…a document of marriage between two individuals can be made under Section 18 of the Act…that way I stay away from Special Marriage Act also.”
