The Supreme Court upheld the UPSC's revision of category-wise vacancies in a government recruitment process. The State of Uttar Pradesh had revised the recruitment requisition to correct erroneous vacancy calculations and ensure statutory compliance with reservation quotas under the UP Reservation Act, 1994. The Court held that such rectification does not vitiate the selection or constitute rule-changing mid-process. While rejecting the plea to appoint 906 non-selected candidates under Article 142, the Court granted them age relaxation as a one-time measure to participate in future recruitment rounds.
