Supreme Court of India 2025-08-04 dismissed

Bhanei Prasad @ Raju vs State of Himachal Pradesh

Bench: 2 — Aravind Kumar, Sandeep Mehta

In Brief

A father was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for repeatedly sexually abusing his minor daughter (around ten years old). The Supreme Court dismissed the father's appeal challenging the High Court's affirmation of conviction. The Court held that the child victim's credible testimony requires no additional corroboration, especially when supported by DNA evidence and medical records. Delay in disclosure was justified by trauma and threats. The Court awarded Rs. 10,50,000 compensation: Rs. 7,00,000 in a five-year fixed deposit (with quarterly interest withdrawals) and Rs. 3,50,000 as direct payment, emphasizing that justice must extend beyond punishment to include meaningful reparation and affirmation of the victim's dignity.
