In Brief
Britannia Industries challenged the applicability of Maharashtra's agricultural marketing law to edible oil, vanaspati, and sugar. The Supreme Court upheld the High Court's finding that all three products qualify as 'agricultural produce' under the Act despite undergoing processing, because their raw materials are agricultural in origin and listed in the Act's Schedule. The Court confirmed the Market Committee can levy market fees only on sugar purchased within its notified market area. It directed the appellant to submit purchase documents to the Committee for verification regarding sugar sourced outside the market area.
