A woman married in 2003 died by suicide in 2006 within seven years of marriage, and her family alleged dowry-related harassment by in-laws. The trial court convicted the sister-in-law, husband, and mother-in-law under dowry death and related offences. The Supreme Court found that while the husband's cruelty and harassment of the deceased was proven, the prosecution failed to establish that this harassment was specifically connected to a demand for dowry. The Court set aside the dowry death conviction but upheld convictions under cruelty and abetment of suicide. The sister-in-law was acquitted due to lack of evidence, and the husband was sentenced to three years' imprisonment.
