Citizens Resource & Action Initiative (CRANTI) vs State of Gujarat & Ors

Bench: 3 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

Citizens Resource & Action Initiative challenged the lack of government action on farmer suicides. The Supreme Court disposed of the petition by directing the Central Government to formulate a comprehensive line of action within four weeks for adoption by State Governments to address this serious issue. Though agriculture is a State subject under the Constitution, the Court recognised the Centre's role in proposing coordinated national guidelines. The proposal was to be submitted to the Court Registry with advance copies to the petitioner's counsel before the next hearing on 1 May 2017.
