Currency Note Press & Anr vs N.N. Sardesai & Ors

Bench: 2 — Abhay Manohar Sapre

In Brief

Employees of the Currency Note Press filed claims for unpaid overtime wages covering 1986–1990 under the Industrial Disputes Act. The Labour Court initially dismissed their applications, but the High Court allowed their writ petition and awarded monetary relief. The appellants challenged this before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal without deciding the legal merits. The Court found five factual reasons sufficient: all 17 claimants had retired or passed away, the sum awarded was modest, the money had already been paid, work was admittedly performed, and the dispute was decades old. The Court deliberately left unresolved certain legal questions about statutory interpretation for future determination."
