Darshan Singh vs State of Punjab

Bench: 2 — Prafulla C. Pant

In Brief

On 17 February 1995, an armed conflict erupted outside court proceedings in Faridkot between two groups disputing irrigation rights. Two persons died from stab wounds. The trial court acquitted Darshan Singh, but the High Court reversed this, convicting him of murder under Section 302 IPC and sentencing him to life imprisonment. The appellant claimed he was at work (alibi). The Supreme Court upheld the conviction, finding that the three injured eyewitnesses credibly identified the appellant's role, confirmed by autopsy evidence showing multiple stab wounds matching the weapon used. The alibi plea was found false, and no illegality was found in the High Court's re-appreciation of evidence."
