Devender Singh & Ors vs The State of Uttarakhand

Bench: 3 — N.V. Ramana, A.S. Bopanna, Hima Kohli

In Brief

This appeal concerns the conviction of three defendants for dowry death under Section 304B IPC. The deceased bride disappeared six months after marriage and was found dead in a river. The trial court acquitted all defendants, but the High Court reversed this conviction. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction of the husband (appellant 1) based on evidence that the deceased had reported specific dowry demands (₹2,00,000 or a house) and harassment before her death. However, the Court acquitted the in-laws (appellants 2 and 3), finding no specific evidence linking them to the dowry demand or harassment. The conviction of the husband was sustained; that of the in-laws was set aside."
