Supreme Court of India 2020-02-28 dismissed

District Bar Association, Dehradun through its Secretary vs Ishwar Shandilya & Ors

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

District Bar Association, Dehradun challenged a High Court judgment restraining advocates from boycotting courts on Saturdays. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition, upholding the High Court's direction. The Court held that strikes and boycotts by advocates disrupt the administration of justice and are impermissible, regardless of underlying grievances. Taking suo moto cognizance of the persistent problem, the Court issued notices to the Bar Council of India and State Bar Councils to suggest measures for preventing and disciplining such work stoppages by the legal profession.
