Supreme Court of India 2023-04-20 disposed

District Bar Association Dehradun vs Ishwar Shandilya & Ors

Bench: 2 — M.R. Shah, Ahsanuddin Amanullah

In Brief

The Bar Council of India sought Supreme Court directions to establish Grievance Redressal Committees (GRCs) to address advocate complaints about procedural changes, court administration, and judicial officer misconduct, aiming to reduce illegal strikes. The Supreme Court agreed and directed all High Courts to constitute GRCs headed by their Chief Justice, with membership including senior judges, bar and service representatives, the Advocate General, and State Bar Council leadership. District Courts were invited to establish similar committees. The Court stressed that while strikes remain impermissible, genuine grievances deserve a forum for ventilation to prevent justified frustration from escalating to unlawful action."
