In Brief
Absorbed employees of Magadh University sought relief in a contempt petition, claiming that their arrears of salary and pension had not been finalized despite interim court orders. The Supreme Court declined to adjudicate the contempt but instead directed the University Registrar/Vice Chancellor to hold a discrete fact-finding enquiry to determine actual working periods and adjudicate claims for salary arrears and pension within three months. Pension entitlements were to be counted from the date of absorption, and excess payments, if any, could be recovered. The Court emphasized that reasoned decisions be passed affording all stakeholders due opportunity.
