For the Microsoft : vs Giri, Sr. Adv., Divyam Agarwal, Advocates

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

Following a letter from NGO Prajwala about sexual violence videos circulating online, the Supreme Court constituted a multi-stakeholder committee with government agencies, law enforcement, technology companies (Facebook, Google, Microsoft, WhatsApp, Yahoo), civil society, and international experts to develop strategies for preventing circulation of child pornography, rape, and gang rape videos. The committee achieved consensus on 11 substantive proposals and two WhatsApp-specific recommendations, including establishing a central reporting mechanism, developing hash-based technologies for content identification, creating capacity-building programs, and expediting removal processes. The Court directed the government and companies to implement consensual recommendations at the earliest and submit status reports in sealed cover; non-consensual proposals are reserved for the next hearing."
