Gopal Neogi vs State of West Bengal

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

Gopal Neogi was convicted of murdering his wife Lakshmi and daughter Mamta based on circumstantial evidence. He was last seen with them on 2 July 1998; their bodies were found the next day with the wife's head severed. The appellant falsely told witnesses they had gone to visit his aunt's house in Polba village, but investigation proved no such visit occurred. Evidence also showed the appellant had a motive—an extra-marital affair causing marital discord. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction, finding the combined circumstances established a complete chain pointing exclusively to the appellant's guilt, satisfying the legal test for conviction under Sections 302/201 IPC.
