A father was murdered on 21 September 2020 allegedly by three assailants acting on the conspiracy of Inderpreet Singh, who was incarcerated when the murder occurred. The High Court released Inderpreet Singh on bail, observing that he did not directly participate in the crime and that his alleged use of a mobile phone from jail was debatable. The Supreme Court set aside the bail, holding that the High Court failed to consider the serious nature of the offence (murder and criminal conspiracy), the accused's four prior convictions and habitual pattern of committing crimes whenever released on bail, the threat to the complainant's family, and evidence that he had allegedly orchestrated the conspiracy from jail. The Court held that bail grants must apply rigorous legal principles and cannot be given mechanically.
