Harpal Singh was convicted of murder and wrongful confinement in connection with a 2000 case in which a man named Banarasi Dass was killed and robbed during a night intrusion. The trial court and high court found that Singh conspired with four others to commit the crime. Singh's defence that cash recovered from him was from the legitimate sale of his mini bus was rejected because the alleged buyer was not produced in evidence. The courts relied on eyewitness testimony, recovery of stolen goods, and an extra-judicial confession. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction, holding that the findings were concurrent between courts and not perverse, and dismissed his appeal.
