Supreme Court of India 2021-01-20 disposed

Bench: 3 — Sanjay Kishan Kaul

In Brief

An Advocate on Record sought permission to register using a professional style 'Law Chambers of [Name]' instead of his registered individual name, claiming partnership firms enjoy such flexibility. The Supreme Court held that while the Rules cannot be amended by judicial order, an individual advocate may use 'Law Chambers of [Name], Sole Proprietor [Full Name]' on letterheads and vakalatnamas if the registered advocate's full name and registration number are clearly stated. Such documents will be treated as filed by the registered advocate. The Court declined to judicially alter the Rules, leaving style-expansion issues to Rule-making authorities.
