Supreme Court of India 2019-12-18 disposed

Bench: 3 — 3

In Brief

This suo motu writ petition examined the implementation of laws relating to rape and sexual offences under the Indian Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure. The Supreme Court sought to assess how provisions for reporting offences, victim protection, and criminal procedure safeguards were being applied across India. The Court directed the Solicitor General and Supreme Court officials to cooperate with an Amicus Curiae in collecting comprehensive information from all States and High Courts. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of the criminal justice system's response to sexual offences and recommend improvements for better victim support and implementation of statutory safeguards.
