In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the difficulties faced by litigants unable to file petitions, suits and appeals due to lockdowns and physical distancing requirements. The Court exercised its extraordinary powers under Articles 142 and 141 of the Constitution to extend all limitation periods—whether under general law or special statutes—from 15 March 2020 until further orders. This binding order applied nationwide to all courts and tribunals, ensuring access to justice was not compromised during the national emergency.
