During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Supreme Court suo motu extended limitation periods to help litigants file proceedings without losing their rights. By March 2021, as courts reopened and normalcy returned, the Court wound down this extension. It fixed 15 March 2021 as the cutoff date: the period from 15 March 2020 to 14 March 2021 is excluded from all limitation calculations. If a limitation would have expired during lockdown, litigants get a fresh 90-day window from 15 March 2021, or longer if their original deadline was further away. The exclusion applies across all courts and covers laws governing arbitration, commercial disputes, and cheque bounces."
