The Supreme Court dismissed an appeal challenging whether workers accessing statutory welfare scheme benefits can file complaints under the Consumer Protection Act. The Court held that beneficiaries of statutory welfare schemes administered by public authorities can invoke Consumer Protection Act remedies for non-sovereign services provided on a contributory basis. Since registered workers make monetary contributions and receive services under notified schemes, they are entitled to public accountability through consumer protection mechanisms, subject to modification of interest rates as ordered by the National Commission.
