During the national lockdown of 2020, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the severe humanitarian crisis affecting migrant workers stranded across India, many of whom were walking long distances without food, water or shelter. Although the Central and State Governments had initiated relief measures, the Court found significant gaps in registration, transport capacity, and provision of essential supplies. The Court issued notice to the Union of India and all States/Union Territories, directing them to submit comprehensive reports on their plans and progress, and scheduled expedited hearings to ensure adequate arrangements were made to assist these vulnerable workers in returning home safely.
