In this suo moto COVID-19 relief judgment dated 6 May 2020, the Supreme Court extended all limitation periods prescribed under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 (Section 29A) and the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 (Section 138) from 15 March 2020 until further orders. Where limitation had already expired after 15 March 2020, the extension applies until 15 days after the lockdown is lifted in the relevant jurisdiction. The order addressed difficulties faced by lawyers and litigants during the national lockdown and aimed to prevent the need for physical court filings.
