The Supreme Court took suo motu notice of remarks made by a High Court of Karnataka judge during live-streamed proceedings on 6 June and 28 August 2024, which were perceived as misogynistic and prejudicial to communities. The judge later tendered a public apology on 21 September 2024. The Court held that while such casual observations reflecting gender or community bias should be avoided, it would conclude proceedings based on the apology, reaffirming that judges must be aware of their predispositions, and that live-streamed proceedings demand heightened responsibility from all judicial stakeholders to avoid remarks that may negatively impact the institution.
