Supreme Court of India 2017-12-15 disposed

Justice K.S. Puttaswamy (Retd) and Anr vs Union of India and Ors

Bench: 5 — D.Y. Chandrachud

In Brief

This judgment addresses interim relief pending the final constitutional adjudication of India's Aadhaar scheme. The Court relaxed earlier interim directions that had limited Aadhaar's use to six schemes and kept it voluntary, following Parliament's enactment of the Aadhaar Act, 2016. However, the Court granted a transition period, extending the deadline for Aadhaar linkage to 31 March 2018 for all central and state government schemes, bank accounts, and mobile E-KYC. The final hearing on the scheme's constitutional validity was scheduled for January 2018.
