In Brief
This clarificatory order addressed the appointment process for members of various tribunals, including the Central Administrative Tribunal, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), and the Central Government Industrial Tribunal. The Court clarified that Tribunal Chairpersons must be appointed by the Central Government in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, that selection committees should continue their work unimpeded, and that tribunal member tenure shall be five years or until the maximum age fixed under governing statutes. Members of NCDRC were allowed to continue until 31 May 2018. The Court made clear that the selection process would continue and no litigation challenging it would be entertained.
