A young man suffered severe injuries in a motor accident that resulted in amputation of his left leg. He sought compensation of Rs. 10,10,000 but the lower courts awarded only Rs. 3,57,800, reducing the medical certificate's 90% permanent disability finding to 60%. The Supreme Court held that the 90% disability assessment by the doctor should not be arbitrarily reduced, as the appellant cannot work as a driver or labourer with an amputated leg. The Court enhanced the total compensation to Rs. 5,20,200, including a higher award for an artificial limb, and directed the insurance company to pay this amount and recover it from the driver and vehicle owner.
