M.C. Mehta vs Union of India & Ors

Bench: 3 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

This environmental law case involved three types of vehicles—CNG, BS-IV, and BS-VI compliant—sought to be registered for essential public utility services by waste management companies. The Supreme Court directed that CNG vehicles must be registered as their emissions are within limits. BS-VI compliant vehicles purchased after 1 April 2020 (when BS-VI norms took effect) are registrable. BS-IV vehicles purchased before the cut-off date may be registered if they comply with norms and are verified through the E-Vahan portal, subject to EPCA scrutiny of necessity. The Court tasked the EPCA to consolidate pending cases to prevent repeated applications."
