In Brief
This case addresses whether power transmission lines can be constructed overhead in areas home to endangered birds like the Great Indian Bustard and Lesser Florican. The Supreme Court, having earlier ordered underground transmission lines, constituted a committee to examine exemption requests. In this April 2022 order, the Court approved two of eight applications for overhead lines, but only on condition that bird divertors (collision-prevention devices) be installed by July 20, 2022. All State and private power producers must comply with these timelines and quality standards. The Court enforced its injunction against unauthorized overhead line installation and required compliance reports."
