During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of School Education (ICSE) cancelled Class XII examinations for 2020-21 and proposed declaring results based on internal assessment marks. A student sought the Court to direct the boards to conduct examinations instead. The Supreme Court held that the boards are autonomous bodies entitled to formulate their own schemes independently. The Court found the proposed scheme—which allows results based on internal assessment with an option for improvement exams later—to be fair, reasonable, and in the larger public interest. The petitions were disposed of without interfering with the scheme.
