A civil appeal concerning 27 officers of Bihar/Jharkhand who were dislocated in 2004 following a court order quashing a 1991 appointment made under a later-annulled reservation policy. By 2016, these officers had held their original posts for over 25 years through interim court orders. The Supreme Court allowed the appeal, directing both States to permit the appellants to retain their originally appointed posts until superannuation. The Court held that after 25 years of continuous uninterrupted service and given that the four originally aggrieved candidates had either been remedied or declined further relief, it would be inequitable to displace the settled position, and no prejudice would result to the States or remaining parties.">
