Nagar Panchayat Moonak and Ors vs State of Punjab and Ors

Bench: 2 — M.R. Shah, B.V. Nagarathna

In Brief

The Supreme Court addressed chronic flooding in the Ghaggar River basin affecting 25 villages in Punjab and Haryana. After directing a comprehensive Mathematical Model Study, CWPRS recommended widening the river (60m–90m) and constructing embankments to limit water level rise to 2 meters. The Court directed both states to implement these recommendations within a specific timeframe, established quarterly reporting to the Central Water Commission, and ordered four-weekly stakeholder meetings to monitor progress. The matter was scheduled for further review.
