A mother in Tamil Nadu administered pesticide to her two young sons and attempted to consume it herself but was prevented by her niece. Her sons died; she survived and was convicted of murder (Section 302 IPC) and attempted suicide (Section 309 IPC), receiving life imprisonment. After serving nearly 20 years, she sought premature release, which a State Committee recommended but the government rejected citing the offence's cruel nature. The Supreme Court upheld the murder conviction but set aside the rejection of premature release, holding there was no valid justification for denying her release given her long incarceration and good conduct in prison.
