Orissa Lift Irrigation Corp. Ltd. & Ors vs Rabi Sankar Patro and Ors

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

The Supreme Court examined the validity of engineering degrees granted by JRN Rajasthan Vidyapith through distance education mode. Finding that the university could not produce valid approval from competent authorities (MHRD/UGC) despite seeking ex post facto endorsement, the Court noted serious fraud affecting public interest. The university lacked demonstrable infrastructure, expertise, and monitoring mechanisms for running 295 professional courses. The Court restrained the university from awarding further degrees pending investigation, gave the university and regulatory authorities an opportunity to file affidavits, and reserved consideration of directing CBI inquiry.
