In Brief
On 14 March 2009, four young men attacked a police party escorting four prisoners on a train near Rewari, resulting in the death of Head Constable Arjun Singh. The appellant Parveen (Sonu) was convicted by the trial court and sessions court for criminal conspiracy and murder. The High Court upheld the conviction. On appeal to the Supreme Court, the Court allowed the appeal and acquitted the appellant, holding that conviction based solely on confessional statements of co-accused without independent corroborative evidence cannot sustain a charge of conspiracy, and that the High Court's confirmation lacked proper analysis of evidence."
