In Brief
Pradeep Ambre challenged a detention order dated 11 August 2005 concerning allegations of smuggling ball bearings disguised as borax decahydrate. After an interim order in March 2007 stayed the detention, Ambre remained at liberty for over a decade without any misconduct. The Settlement Commission subsequently exonerated him, finding all allegations baseless and unfounded on preponderance of probability. The Supreme Court held the detention order unjustified, citing the prolonged delay, absence of any untoward activity, and the Settlement Commission's exoneration. The Court set aside the detention order and disposed of the petition.
