In Brief
Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation challenged a High Court judgment that set aside an arbitrator's award rejecting respondents' claims for unpaid batons and security deposit. The High Court had found the award lacked proper reasoning. The Supreme Court held that when reviewing an arbitral award under Section 37 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996, the High Court cannot act as a first appellate court or directly decree claims. Its role is limited to checking if the District Judge properly applied Section 34. The award, which contained reasoned factual findings, could not be set aside merely for not expressly discussing every document. The appeal was allowed and the High Court's judgment set aside.
