In Brief
The appellant appealed against the High Court's order quashing a contempt conviction imposing one month's imprisonment on the respondents for willfully disobeying a court order. The respondents offered no legitimate explanation for their non-compliance. The Supreme Court held that the High Court was wrong to set aside the trial Court's contempt order without following the procedural rules under Order 39, Rule 2A of the Code of Civil Procedure and without providing reasons. The Court affirmed that willful disobedience of a duly communicated court order justifies contempt action, and the High Court's arbitrary interference was legally unsustainable. The appeal was allowed.
