In Brief
Rajnarayan Sharma sought to enforce his purchase of agricultural land in Madhya Pradesh against plaintiffs claiming to be sub-lessees. The plaintiffs claimed possession as sub-lessees of the original owner Bansi but produced no lease deed, rent receipts, or documentary proof of payment. The only evidence was their names in old khasra (revenue) entries, which had been formally cancelled by the revenue officer as incorrect. The Supreme Court held that cancelled and corrected revenue records cannot establish possession without corroborating evidence. The registered sale deeds in the defendants' favor, coupled with valid revenue mutations, established their possession. The Court dismissed the plaintiffs' suit entirely.
