Rakesh Vaishnav & Ors vs Union of India & Ors

Bench: 3 — Subramanian, Rastogi, Bhat

In Brief

In this landmark interim order on combined farm law petitions, the Supreme Court addressed challenges to three 2020 agricultural reform laws and mass farmers' protests blocking Delhi's borders. While not deciding constitutional validity on the merits, the Court stayed implementation of the Farmers' Produce Trade Act, the Essential Commodities Amendment Act, and the Farm Services Act pending resolution. The Court maintained the pre-existing Minimum Support Price system and protected farmers' land holdings. The Court constituted a four-member expert committee to mediate between farmers' bodies and the Government, hoping to resolve grievances through negotiation rather than protracted litigation, encouraging both sides to engage constructively."
