Rambir was convicted of murdering his wife by strangulating her with a metal rod (saria) during a quarrel over money on a rooftop in Delhi. The High Court upheld the life sentence under Section 302 IPC (murder). The Supreme Court partially allowed his appeal, finding that he qualified for Exception 4 to Section 300 IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) because the act occurred suddenly without premeditation, in a fit of anger during a domestic dispute. The Court held that strangulation, unless barbaric and brutal, does not constitute extreme cruelty. The conviction was modified to Section 304 Part II IPC with 10 years' simple imprisonment.
